Are You Working at Home or From Home?

February 3rd, 2008 by Donnie Baird

When you think of beginning a work at home business, what type of business comes to mind? Normally, when someone mentioned working at home to me, I naturally thought of a network marketing opportunity or an affiliate program. There are, however, several different ways of working at home. There is a basic difference between working at home and working from home.

Working at home involves sitting in front of the computer, building and or advertising a product or opportunity. It will usually also involve building and promoting a website. Members of your team may be local or from almost any part of the world. There is usually no need to stock inventory and many times the product or service may be electronic in nature, such as some type of e-book or another product or service that can be gotten “instantaneously” by download.

Working from home, on the other hand, involves more than just sitting in front of a computer. My wife is a Mary Kay consultant who works from home. She still spends a lot of time on the computer. She also advertises her products and business opportunity. But most of her advertising is done through work of mouth or “prospecting” at the local malls or stores. Most of her clients will be local and she does stock some inventory for her customers who want it “instantaneously.”

Both working at home and working from home have the same basic advantages. They both offer you freedom and flexibility. They both let you set your own hours and to be your own boss. They also allow you to spend more time with your family and both have certain tax advantages. They both have the same disadvantages as well. Both call for self discipline. Both require the ability to set your own hours and stick to them, as well as the ability to focus on the task at hand while ignoring things around the house that need doing. It can also be lonely working by one’s self as well as avoiding interruptions.

So, which one is best-working at home or working from home? That depends on the likes and dislikes of the individual. I love sitting in front of the computer and working on my websites. I like advertising using PPC and using articles to promote my businesses. I communicate with others mostly through e-mail. On the other hand, my wife enjoys interacting with others in a more personal manner. She enjoys the meetings and the get together of the local Mary Kay consultants. She just likes getting out of the house or talking to others on the phone. So, while we both are at home working, I work at home while she works from home.
